The 49th Parallel Rose collection is a stunning collection of roses bred specifically to blossom in Canadian climates and celebrate the natural beauty of our country.
Developed by the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre in partnership with the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association (CNLA), the collection includes three variations; the Canadian Shield (2017), the Chinook Sunrise (2019), and the Aurora Borealis (2021). The next variation, Yukon Sun, will be released in 2023.
More about the 59th Parrallel Rose collection from the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre:
Canada has a long tradition breeding hardy roses beginning with the Dominion Department of Agriculture and continuing with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Morden, Manitoba. The national program in place at Vineland upholds this fine breeding tradition with the added guidance of consumer insights research to ensure the roses are perfect for the 21st century gardener.
Vineland’s collection includes versatile garden and landscape roses that stay stunning throughout the gardening season. They are disease resistant and winter hardy meaning there are no shrinking violets in this collection.
The roses include low-maintenance features, vibrant colours, deep green glossy foliage and will continuously bloom all summer long.
Here at Assiniboine Park, we’re home to all three varieties:
- Canadian Shield: Full, red flowers and glossy green foliage.
- Chinook Sunrise: Exotic coral coloured flowers.
- Aurora Borealis: Sunset pink rose with dark green and glossy foliage.
All three varieties can be seen at the English Garden.
